SUMMARY:Lifeguarding in Crantock in the 60's - A talk by Ben Dobson
DESCRIPTION:Tourism began to flourish in Cornwall during the early 20th century\, helped by the arrival of the Great Western Railway. As more people headed to the coast\, the number of bathing accidents increased and\, by the 1950s\, Cornwall was averaging around ten drownings each year. \nFollowing a police-led conference on beach safety\, local authorities began employing lifeguards\, often supported by local Surf Life Saving Clubs. Newquay had already introduced lifeguards in 1947 under the guidance of Publicity Officer Edward Trembath\, with the service expanding to Crantock in 1960. \nThis talk explores the conditions faced by Crantock’s first lifeguards and the vital role played by the local community in supporting these early lifesavers. A fascinating look back at a time when beach safety was still finding its feet and local knowledge\, courage and community spirit were often the most important rescue tools of all. \nFREE ENTRY. DONATIONS GO TO CRANTOCK SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB.
